Puerto Vallarta Whale Watch Report March 2017

Thanks to all of the wonderful guests who joined Whale Watch Vallarta this March to responsibly meet the amazing Humpback Whales here in Puerto Vallarta. This is the Puerto Vallarta Whale Watch Report  for March, 2017.

During March we saw more overall Humpback Whales than in any year past. There were many instances of courtship behaviour observed, which we expect may lead to a high number of baby Humpbacks being born in the Bay of Banderas next December and January.

Of course this is the principle reason the Humpback Whales return to Puerto Vallarta between December and March every year. The Bay of Banderas on Puerto Vallarta is one of the most important bays on the west mainland of Mexico for Humpback Whale reproduction, calving and nursing.

This often makes Puerto Vallarta whale watching tours very exciting. The adult Humpback Whales compete for the attention of female whales. This often results in spectacular displays by these immense ocean travellers. The baby Humpback Whales can also be quite frisky – as they nurse and gain strength in the calm waters of the bay, they explore their environment and learn about their own abilities. Often this means a joyous display of baby Humpback Whale displays.

During the month of March 2017, Whale Watch Vallarta also encountered our resident Bottlenose Dolphins on the majority of our tours. Additionally we had the pleasure of observing Giant Manta Rays and Sea Turtles on most of the tours as well! The Manta Rays feed on small floating organisms in the bay while the Sea Turtles were often observed in mating encounters.

Beyond these regular encounters Whale Watch Vallarta also had the chance to observe multiple pods of Spotted Dolphins throughout the month of March, 2017. Finally, we even managed to find a pod of Sperm Whales! A very exciting and rare encounter here in Puerto Vallarta.

The Humpback Whales have now all migrated north to their feeding grounds. So the Puerto Vallarta whale watching season has now ended and Whale Watch Vallarta is now closing for the offseason.

Whale Watch Vallarta will be starting tours again on December 8th, 2017 when the Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Season officially begins.

Thanks again to all the wonderful guests who joined us March, 2017 for fun and respectful whale watching tours in Puerto Vallarta.

Whale regards, Whale Watch Vallarta 🙂
